Rob Schultz here and you're watching TSTDRVR. Today, I bring you a special episode that's a mix of nostalgia, appreciation, and a hint of farewell sadness. We're talking about a car that's been somewhat of a hidden gem in the automotive world – my 1998 SVT Ford Contour. In less than 24 hours, this car will be heading to a new home, and before it goes, I want to share my journey with this unique vehicle.
The Forgotten SVT
When you first lay eyes on the SVT Ford Contour, you might be tempted to think, "Is that a Ford Escort or a strangely designed Ford Taurus?" But there's more to this car than meets the eye. Produced from 1998 to 2000, the SVT Contour was Ford's ambitious attempt to compete with German stalwarts like the BMW 3 Series. Despite its potential, it didn't quite make a mark on the market, with less than 11,500 units produced over its lifespan.
Priced at around $23,000, it was a tough sell for the American family who could opt for the larger Ford Taurus instead. However, for those who did take the plunge, the SVT Contour offered a thrilling driving experience, thanks to its 200 horsepower engine and a five-speed manual transmission that truly came alive at 4000 RPMs.
A Gift to my 17-Year Old Self
The SVT Contour holds a special place in my heart. As a teenager, I owned a base model Ford Contour and always dreamt of upgrading to the SVT version. Years later, I made that dream a reality, purchasing it as a nod to my 17-year-old self. While I had intentions of transforming it into a showpiece, reality set in. With 180,000 miles on the clock, a non-functional driver's side window, a defunct air conditioning system, and a suspension begging for an overhaul, I faced a tough decision.
The Decision to Let It Go
After much deliberation and considering the costs involved in restoring the car to its former glory, I've decided to pass the torch to someone else who shares a passion for these machines. It's time for this SVT Contour to create new memories with its next owner.
Despite its flaws, the SVT Contour has been a joy to drive. Its agility on twisty roads, the comfort of the well-preserved seats, and the distinct growl of its six-cylinder engine are aspects I'll genuinely miss. It's been a reliable companion for those spontaneous drives through the state park, offering pure driving pleasure even if it wasn't the fastest on the road.
Looking Ahead
As we bid farewell to the SVT Ford Contour, I'm excited about what the future holds. Whether I find another gem to restore or embark on a different automotive adventure, the journey will continue here on TSTDRVR.
Thank you for joining me on this bittersweet farewell. Your support and passion for cars make this community an incredible place to share our automotive stories.
